I don't know how many times we traveled from SC to Portland, Oregon when I was young. Four kids in a station wagon, and it always took us five days, even when dad had to rebuild a carb on the side of the road.

My buddy and I drove from St Pete to Portland in six days, and that was stopping off at the Grand Canyon, and going through Vegs. I also drove from Portland to St Pete in an Edsel station wagon back in 1976.:sifone:

Good luck and have a safe trip. I don't know what the temperature's like out there now, but one thing surprised me when I was out there before - even if only briefly...

Tires take a beating in the desert heat. Wife and I were driving out west on Rt. 10, we have a semi on the right of us, and a light Mercedes truck slowly starts to pass us on the left, with the passenger-side front tire hopping real bad, like it's out of alignment. He's about even w/ my window, and it's about 112 degrees outside; the thought immediately occured to me:

"Wow, that's not good. Hard on the tire, and in this kind of heat, there's not a lot of margin for error...and..."

"BANG!!!!!!"

His tire disintegrates, my wife screams, and with my natural reaction to jerk away, I have to jerk back again to keep from hitting the semi on my right...

Needless to say, for the rest of the next 100 miles or so, I couldn't help but notice all the shredded tire crap on the side of the road. They even had crews out cleaning it up, so I guess it happens pretty regularly...:ack2:

In any case, watch those trailer tires!

Well, first two days on this "temp" job (the move), have been successful.
Damn glad I finally went out and bought a new GPS last night. Named it "Trixie" because of the chicks voice - sounds like a retired stripper.
The movers packed the house yesterday, and they loaded everything today by 1:30.
Hit the road about 2:45, and made to just outside St. Louis by 7:30 (local time). It was getting dark, so I thought maybe a good time to stop for the night, almost 350 miles.
Just setting the cruize to within 2 miles of posted, and being safe. Don't really want to beat my furniture and stuff getting there.
Doing a vehicle inspection every time we stop.
No alarm tomorrow morning, hit the road when we get up, and shoot through St. Louis early on a Sunday. Should be easy.
Weather was great today, and looks like we'll dodge the rain tomorrow.
Plan on stopping tomorrow again right around dusk.
Probably land somewhere in OK maybe TX tomorrow.
The dogs slept most the way, but they were worn out from being locked outside all morning while the movers were loading. Tomorrow they get "happy pills".
I didn't realize how much crap we've accumulated. 93 boxes for two people + about the same in furniture type stuff.
Hell, when we first got together, we moved everything in one trip with my Dually, and her BMW 3series (loaded up with boxes) on a car hauler behind the truck. That was ~9 yrs ago. I have a lot of crap that I made them move that I need to throw away, but, needs to be gone through - didn't have the time today.

Nice ride so far.

The more space you have, the more stuff you accumulate- when I moved from my house (4500SF) to the RV (sub 400SF) I had to get rid of a lot of crap and don't miss any of it.

We stayed in O'Fallon, figuerd I'd wait until this morning to drive through St. Louis, and wanted to stop before getting into East St. Louis.
If I'd realized you were out that way, I would have made arrangements.

We got on the road this morning about 8:45, after doping the dogs - they were OUT the entire day.
Made to Elk City OK around 6:45. Made about 600 miles today. Windy as hell across OK.
Day 2 successful.
2 more days on the road.

I am about 10 minutes north of O'fallon. Hell, I would have put you up in the spare bedroom, or at least got you a free hotel room. I built a couple of the hotels in Ofallon. I like Phoenix, never know when I might show up at your door.

We stayed at some extended stay place right off the hwy.
It was convenient for the boat, and the two dogs.

Surprising, when I stopped at a carryout to pick up beer here in Elk City OK to take back to the room, I had a young guy stop me and start asking about the boat - and he actually knew something about boats. Said he was working on a 210 Stinger.
Let me tell ya, Elk City isn't very big.
I'm loking at the maps tonight, and tomorrow may turn into a 12 hr day just to find a decent hotel.
Running through the desert tomorrow - should at least be good scenery.

Most of what you're seeing is recapped tires that let go from the heat. Run'n hard, heat'n up a recap that may have a casing on it's third go around will shread'm. If your tires are good and they're not over loaded, you're good to go. Keep the speed down and the tires won't heat up too bad. Check your hubs for heat too.

Glad to hear the trip is go'n good. I'm asuming your go'n across to Flagstaff and down. Gallop, NM will be about 575 miles. Not much after that untill Flagstaff (750 miles)
Take it easy down I-17. Pretty much down hill from Black Mountain into Phoenix. Pretty good grade at times.

If you want a really scenic route, take I-27 south out of Amarillo to 60 to 70 down thru Roswell, Lincoln National Forest, Alamogordo, White Sands Missle Range, over San Augustin pass into Las Cruces and I-10 thru Tucson to Phoenix. Use to run it with the truck when we loaded produce out of Nogales on the Mexico border.
