Thunder on the Gulf wraps up on Pensacola Bay, thousands cheer on in extreme heat
PENSACOLA, Florida -- Hundreds of people endured extreme heat at Plaza de Luna in historic downtown to watch the power boats of Thunder on the Gulf on Sunday afternoon, the final day of races.
After being held in Orange Beach, Ala. for the better part of a decade, the three-day event governed by the Gulf Coast Power Boat Association moved to Pensacola, save for one race on Friday afternoon behind Turquoise Place and the Island House Hotel. Racing on the bay or in the Gulf of Mexico, it didn't matter to J.R. Noble, the owner and driver of the orange Stihl power boat.
"Yeah, I mean it really all depends on conditions but it tends to be calmer in a bay situation. Either way, we go full on and hope for the best," said Noble. "We like coming here for Thunder on the Gulf. It's a good race."
As the temperature reaches 99 degrees at 2 p.m. in Pensacola, the mighty power boats were racing across the bay. At Maritime Park, hundreds more people sat in the grass watching the boats tear up the relatively calm water of the bay.
Leaning on a rail with binoculars in Plaza de Luna was Conner Stevens, 22, who was on vacation from Mississippi with a group of friends. "This is awesome," said Stevens. "I've seen these same boats before in the Smokin' the Sound in Mississippi but seeing them here this close is really cool. I think the sound of the engines is what's exciting."
