Things may change seeing as I now have 4 person canopy mold, but either way the single F-16 lid had to be removed and the tube widened 7 inches on each side to allow enough room for a side by side configuration.

SteP1 START CUTTING..
Once everything was cut clear we removed the F-16 Canopy, It was pretty heavy - I was a little surprised.
:ack2:
I'm really shocked how thick this hull/deck is.. In some areas it's 1 1/2- 1 3/4:eek:
The boat is scary solid ! Oh' and I have 2 80 gal fuel tanks for those 500 mile offshore races.
Next we removed all the rigging and cut the lip back to exposed the tube completely
The fuel tanks actually sit 2 inch's higher than the bottom of the floor, so this will require us to build a "sub floor" witch will not be so bad because I can run all the rigging under it
All this work was done on Sunday (8hrs) so I feel we got a pretty good jump on the project, but with work and another race boat this is going to take a while.
Once I rebuild a larger tub I'll look into the 4 person skater canopy I have, If I feel it cannot be attached safely and securely I will attach a fairing I have off another cat and graft that in.
Another great build project !!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool!! keep us posted :sifone: :D
Rick, I am glad you finally committed to that project, it was a long time comming !!:driving:
That back room sure looks familiar !
Sparky! Long time, no see bud! Hope all is well.
Cool project Rick, amazing what you find once you start cutting into these things.
Last night after work I finished opening up the cockpit to the needed size.
I than "mocked up" some cardboard to the angles I would like the windscreen or canopy lid if I go that route.
after placing a couple 2x4 across the opening to give my seats a flat surface to sit on I'll start setting seat height and position
Can I just say BOOOOO! :sifone: And good luck! Looks like it's coming along nicely.
:cheers2:
cuttin' apart boats is fun! :bump:
So does the fiberglass glass in your arms.
A little quick photoshop work.. lol. Each panel is build so I can move it with support parts behind, just like in real life.. :driving:
Hey Rick, so you decided to do it.
I think you should put the side by side on and go see what Ryan does out there on the course......:sifone:
Are you going to try for 4 seats, or just side by side????
It will be a side x side with a simple rumble seat (bench) in back for the cooler or kids when cruising around Lake St Clair.
I might order a couple more buckets and put them in back, but that decision wont need to be made for a little while.
Are you gonna pull a flimsy canopy from the mold and set it on there to see what you have???
Rick, Your doing a killer job !! I will call on the resin tomorrow .
Wow, you move fast. Looks great! Keep us posted as I love projects like this.
I just ordered a 55 gal. drum of resin and 100yrds of 1708 cloth...
Ok, back at it today...
I than used cardboard chuncks to build a templet for my new bulkheads
Once the shape was good I cut out some parts out of 5/8
Once cut I rounded the edges and they slid in perfect!
Keep in mind this wood will be painted with resin and have 1708 cloth over it, than put back together and another layer will be placed over that.
Other side, same story... and basic shape
Last I caped off the end behind the front seats with some 5/8 that will be tided into the main floor as well as the deck.
Same as the bulkheads, I made a cardboard template and traced it on the plywood.. perfect fit.
Thats it for today... I'm going to the bar. :cheers2:
Don't want to hijack Rick's thread (very cool thread BTW Rick) but we ended up selling the Cougar to a guy who had "dreams" it just wasn't in the cards for us to get it done. So about 6 months ago a buddy of mine says "Hey I saw the Cougar" . Turns out it is about a mile from my house in a marina stall. Guy has hacked the top off and is trying to fabricate a canopy. He has told people he wants to hang like 4 outboards on the back and go 150 :sifone: I am trying to get a chance to see it, might have to get some pics:) Good luck in SC, hope to see ya at the races!:sifone:
Love the seats... :)
